As we enter the homestretch for the spring semester, we see an increase in the volume of payments made to students.  Terms such as wages, stipend, prize, award, and fellowship are sometimes used interchangeably, but not always correctly.  Determining the type of payment to be made, and understanding the tax consequences can be very confusing.  In an effort to help guide you in choosing the correct payment type for your situation, the Controller’s Office has developed a new flowchart and student disbursement definition document to guide you.  We’ve also added a “Disbursements to Students” section to our forms page with links to forms for onboarding new student employees as well as making payments to students through Accounts Payable.
